Combined Driving

The sport we know as combined driving is relatively young on the world scene, the first comprehensive and standardized rules having been laid down in the early 1970s under the leadership of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.  Combined Driving has been patterned after ridden Three-Day Eventing which in turn has its roots in the exercises of comprehensive mounted military exercises.

The ADS offers four different formats of combined driving: Combined Driving Events, or CDEs; Driving Trials, or DTs (previously known as HDTs); Arena Trials or ATs; Combined Tests or CTs and the Driving Derby. These formats allow organizers to choose the size of competition they can handle, with consideration given to available land, volunteers and other needed resources. The ADS requirements have been designed to fit the budget expectations, according to the number of competitors.

DTs can be held all in one day or as many as three. The marathon consists of only one section — Section B — that has the obstacles. The expectation of obstacle quality is somewhat less and can require fewer volunteers and licensed officials.
